Burying The Tribe

He Had A Dream To Bury The Tribe Deep

The Greektown concept started over a decade ago. The brain child of none other than Bernard Bouschor. He wanted to be the first Native CEO to open a Casino in Michigan. Bouschor made the majority of the decisions in Greektown almost solely. He couldn't do it alone so he incorporated the Greeks who had little money. A deal that they couldn't refuse. The Tribe provided the majority of the money, while the Greeks provided a mere pittance.

During the process the Greeks were determined unqualified for a gaming license. Bouschor moved forward regardless. With them on the Tribes coat-tails. For a minimal investment the Greeks received over 300 million dollars and weren't even fit to be licensed. The people of the Tribe were fit to be doomed.

Bouschor layed a line of BS to the Membership from the Sault to Detroit. Following are several quotes by Bouschor in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Greektown Casino is a "diamond mine" that will help Upper Peninsula Chippewa Indians gather wealth, improve services and spread influence nationwide, the tribe's leader says.

"The Greektown Casino will give us long-term stability," said Bernard Bouschor.

"The Kewadin Casino is our gold mine. Greektown will be our diamond mine," Bouschor said.

Bouschor said the next step is to expand the tribe's infrastructure and services.
"I see us adding services to two more counties. We plan to add to Emmett County and Cheboygan County. We will grow by big leaps, then we will go nationwide," he told The Evening News of Sault Ste. Marie.

Bouschor said it's an occasion that he's dreamed of for 12 years. End Quotes

The last statement says it all. Nothing but a dream. A dream that has nearly depleted all the Tribes resources. Do the words corporate malfeasance and white-collar crime come to mind? They should. The Tribe is nearly broke due to all the overruns of Bouschors dreams and bad deals.

Now comes the Greek back again. Just out of the sky Gatzaros becomes eligible for a gaming license. Couldn't before, but can now. That should immediately raise a flag in reference to the Michigan Gaming Commissions licensing procedures. The Michigan Gaming Commission has a long history of shady deals with Tribes. Where are the Feds when you need them? There are clearly some improprieties with the conduct of the Michigan Gaming Commission.

The future of Greektown looks real dim. There is talk of selling Greektown and one of the potential buyers is none other than Ted Gatzaros who will be paying for Greektown with the Tribes money. The Tribes money that Bernard Bouschor brokered a bad deal with.

What will Bouschors role in Greektown be? CEO maybe? Bouschor knew regardless of what happened he would come out in a win win situation for him. The probabilities of Bouschor getting a cut on the next deal are real good. He does nothing for free.

Red Flags

Where was the Michigan Gaming Control Board on this one? The deals sends up a million red flags. Was Nelson Westrin party to the overall scheme? We may never know as Westrin took those secrets to his grave. The Federal Government should be investigating who the other accomplices were.

Greed

This deal was designed to benefit a very small group of people. Indicators show that the Sault Tribe Membership was never intended to be the beneficiary of this crooked deal. Now the Sault Tribe Members will carry the burden of a near ONE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS and Gatzaros will probably walk away with the Greektown Casino using the sweat off Tribal Members backs.

The Clowns

Payment and Lumsden were Bouschors clowns. While Bouschor was playing big shot in Detroit. Payment and Lumsden had their own plan for the Northern Michigan Casinos. Lumsdens wandering hands and Payments stupidity were their downfall. Payment won the 04 Election temporarily delaying the demise of the Tribe for 4 years.

The Straight Shooter

The 08 Election brings in a straight shooter by the name of Joe McCoy. The first elected Chairperson who wasn't in for it for the money. Chairperson Mccoy has spent his entire time thus far, reversing the wrongdoings of the past 3 decades of leadership. With sneaks like Bouschor, Payment and Paquin, McCoy has his hands full.

The Feds

Will the Feds investigate just Paquin or the fleecing of over 30,000 Tribal Members over the past 3 decades? The information is there waiting for them. Maybe the new President will take accountability more serious than the last President.

Hot Off The Press

The latest below on one of Bouschors escapades from 2004. The Board has an opportunuty to right this wrong. Will they is the best question.

SAULT STE. MARIE — A 25-page ruling from the State of Michigan Court of Appeals appears to clear the way for a civil trial pitting former Chairman Bernard Bouschor and five co-defendants against the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians in a $2.6 million lawsuit that has simmered for more than four years

FBI Investigation

Tribal Shareholders Shake Down

This from Little Miss Sunshine, Lynne Weaver. I would like to believe that the "pointed finger" goes in all directions as she claims. Information has been given to the FBI over a period of a decade, enough to point the finger at other past and present tribal leaders.

I have yet to have the FBI at my doorstep asking for information knowing I gave them pages of documentation. Of course the FBI also knows I don't trust their capabilities to bring tribal leaders to justice. In the case of the present investigation it is my belief that someone presented information to the FBI as well as other investigative agencies so that the FBI could not push it under the rug.

If, and that's a big if, the FBI is able to convict Fast Freddie it will open the door for investigations of others. I think we would all agree that when Federal Dollars are given and taken there are strict guidelines and responsibilities and they do in fact fall on the entire Board of Directors.

How long has the membership been wanting to inspect our records? I know I have asked several times to exercise my constitutional right under Article VIII- Bill of Rights and Article III-Tribal Records of the Bylaws. In order to be a federally recognized tribe the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians had to assure the United States Government they would allow it's tribal membership all the rights and privileges United States Citizens enjoy.

The Culture Committee was told at the last meeting that they had no right to see their budget figures. One reason, quoted, was that there was personal information in them. I'm sure there is personal information in many records, ie; what individuals are paid by the tribe. But the records can be recorded in such a way that personal information be exempt for inspection. We as tribal members are stockholders so to speak and our leaders are telling us it's none of our business how they spend our money.

Granted I don't need to know employee’s names, addresses and personal information but their wages are not personal when paid with public (tribal) dollars.

The Federal, State, County, Township and Municipal government records are there for the public to review. According to our Constitution, "No member shall be denied any of the rights or guarantees enjoyed by citizens under the Constitution of the United States."

Had we not been denied our Constitutional Rights by the past and present tribal elected officials we may not be in bankruptcy and financial trouble today. I can say with confidence that not one elected tribal official has ever personally reviewed a line item budget of any of our tribal enterprises.

Back to the business at hand! A conviction of Fast Freddie will put the FBI in a very precarious predicament. Do they want to step on certain toes? Their tribal investigative history says no. Is the FBI as interested in constitutional violations as they are money?
